Stepping back to move forward: a day of rest and reflection at Ellasfield
What if taking a step back is sometimes more important than taking a step forward?
Earlier this month, the leaders of our partner charities stepped away from the day-to-day demands of running an organisation for a retreat focused on sustainable leadership and wellbeing.
Make it stand out
A day away from the doing — our partners at Ellasfield.
The day had no agenda in the usual sense. It wasn't about solving problems or making plans. It was about giving our partners permission to slow down, reflect and enjoy some well-deserved rest — something that rarely makes it onto the to-do list of anyone leading a small charity.
Ellasfield was the perfect setting. From Kim's wonderful cacao welcome to the beautiful surroundings, the delicious food and the thoughtful touches throughout the day, everything came together to create a warm, nurturing and restorative experience.
"I left feeling rejuvenated, uplifted, and deeply happy."

Common ground
As the group reflected together, some shared themes began to emerge: decision fatigue, the challenge of balancing endless demands with self-care, and how easy it is to lose sight of the passion that inspired you to start as the demands of leading an organisation grow.
These are the pressures that sit behind the work rather than in front of it — rarely discussed, and often carried alone.
Perhaps the biggest takeaway was the importance of stepping back from the doing to reconnect with yourself and one another. Time to pause, reflect and have some fun.
Why we make space for this
At The Pearce Foundation, we believe that building strong organisations starts with supporting the people who lead them. Grants matter, but so does the wraparound support that helps leaders sustain themselves and each other over the long term — and days like this one are part of that.
Because sustainable organisations need sustainable leaders.
A huge thank you to Kim at Ellasfield, Emily Webster, and Nicole and Maria from Wellbody Wellmind Wellbeing for helping make the day so special.
